Theta Labs has officially received a U.S. patent. The Theta team’s creative and novel approaches to decentralized video streaming have been validated by the patent 11,153,358 for Methods and Systems for Data Caching and Delivery over a Decentralized Edge Network. The patent’s Edge Network is a multi-layer global cache that includes peer viewers, Edge Nodes, and CDN servers.

The New Patent

This patent expands on previous Theta patents, firstly, for peer node discovery methods and systems. Secondly, ultra-high transaction throughput micropayments. Thirdly, decentralized data streaming, and delivery. Finally, preventing denial-of-service attacks in decentralized edge networks and decentralized DRM via NFTs. Therefore, resulting in a portfolio of patents that differentiate and protect the Theta technology and ecosystem.

The proprietary Edge Network is made up of peer-to-peer (P2P) connections. These are built on top of a content delivery network (CDN) with CDN servers that transport data to network nodes. Viewer peer nodes, edge cacher peer nodes (Edge Nodes), tracker servers, and a payment service module are all part of this hybrid network. A tracker server receives client statistics from an Edge Node.

This includes a cache location and a performance specification. In exchange, the tracker server sends caching instructions to the Edge Node. This instructs it to download portions of a data file from a CDN server for later transmission to other decentralized data distribution edge network viewer peer nodes.

How Theta Patent Works

The patent covers many strategies for optimizing peer-to-peer video and data distribution. A caching instruction generates for live-streamed video based on a popularity score for the specific video stream. Furthermore, establishing a content priority list that informs Edge Nodes which material is most important to store. Nodes will send ping messages to the tracker server on a regular basis to show that the Edge Node is active. This will influence which nodes will stream video data to a certain user.

After receiving a payment authorization certificate from the tracker server as authorization to share the video/data file with at least one viewer node in the Edge Network. The Edge Node will send a signed service receipt from at least one viewer to the tracker server. This indicates that it delivered the requested file. In exchange, the Edge Node receives an updated off-chain transaction from the tracker server. Then confirms the entire payment amount owing to the Edge Network for its services.

Verdict

The Theta hybrid Edge Network combines the advantages of P2P and CDN techniques in order to provide high scalability and resource accessibility, as well as the following features:

  • Self-organizing, adaptive, and evolving, with minimal operational costs, high scalability, and availability.
  • A network node can join or leave at any moment by simply plugging it in.
  • Within a single data retrieval architecture, it supports the transmission of multiple types of material (e.g., Livestream, VoD, data blob, etc.).
  • Highly secure, compatible with Digital Rights Management (DRM), and compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
