Olive Allen, a Russian native and artist who has resided in the United States for over 11 years, burnt her home nation’s passport in the aim of generating awareness and donations for the Ukrainian military conflict.

Allen characterized herself as a “daughter of new Russia” on Friday. She said Russia would always be a key component of her existence. Although she had opted to sever connections with it due to its current behavior in Ukraine. Allen burnt her Russian passport. She claimed the passport was the only one she possessed. This is in front of the Russian Federation Consulate General in New York City. She even intended to sell the clip as a non-fungible token (NFT). The revenues going to humanitarian assistance in Ukraine.

Purpose for Russian Allen’s Actions

Allen has been working in the cryptocurrency world since early 2018 after the December 2017 Bitcoin (BTC) bull market. She decided to destroy her passport because she couldn’t see herself going back to Russia under its present government. Allen stated that she intended to refute the argument that all Russian citizens supported military strikes against Ukraine. Furthermore, she knew individuals in the nation who supported the government to the point of no return because of their indoctrination. She went on to say that. While she loved her country, she didn’t accept Putin’s Russia and couldn’t imagine herself residing there in the present state.

For her burned passport NFT, it went up for sale on the SuperRare market place on Friday. Allen stated that the proceeds from the sale would directly contribute Ether (ETH) to Save the Children. It is an entity with the dedication in assisting children all over the world who are victims of human trafficking, early marriage, inability to receive an education, and escaping war.

Allen indicated that she prefers to make funds to humanitarian groups rather than the military. Save the Children is presently collecting cryptocurrency donations in BTC and ETH via the nonprofit fundraising site Giving Block for the nearly 7.5 million children locked in the whirlwind of war in Ukraine.

The NFT artist said that by openly burning her passport, she was essentially making it unsafe to return home by expressing her dissatisfaction with the government. Allen added that she could never return to Russia under the present system because she would be in jail immediately. She went on to say that in Russia, individuals are in jail for much less.

Is Burning Her Passport a Sign of Citizenship Renunciation?

Generally speaking, burning one’s passport does not imply renunciation of citizenship in any country. An individual living overseas can renounce their Russian citizenship “of their own free will,” as per a federal law passed in 2002. Unless they are under prosecution in Russia. Or they have no other nation’s citizenship, or incur “an unfulfilled duty to the Russian Federation.”

Allen would most likely need to submit an intact passport and file out papers at a Russian consulate in order to formally sever ties with the country. Though she stated that she might continue this path in the future, being essentially on a blacklist was sufficient to have her dread detaining upon returning to Russian territory.
